Penicillin Allergy: How to Test Your Allergy & Access Better Antibiotics

drug allergy podcast Oct 22, 2026

About 10% of people in the United States report that they have penicillin allergy. But when patients with that label are carefully evaluated, the majority of them can ultimately tolerate that class of antibiotic without any issue.

An inaccurate penicillin allergy label can limit antibiotic choices, potentially leading to the use of broader-spectrum, less effective, or more expensive alternatives when penicillin-based antibiotics may be the preferred treatment.

In this episode, Dr Deepa Grandon, triple-board certified physician and virtual care specialist in allergy and immunology, shares the reasons penicillin allergy might be mislabeled or no longer be valid, penicillin allergy testing and when to remove the label from your chart.
